Ground oregano is a great ingredient in rubs for meat, fish or chicken! Mexican oregano has a more earthy flavour than oregano from Greece, which supplies most of the world with the ground form of this herb, and Mexican oregano stands up better in spicy food. Enjoy in a massive range of dishes!
Mexican oregano, unlike oregano from Greece, is a relative of lemon verbena. This herb is native to Mexico, but it also grows well in Central and South America. You might have heard of it referred to as Puerto Rican oregano.
What does it taste like?
Mexican ground oregano shares the same base flavour as Mediterranean oregano, which means that it can be used in the same way and in similar dishes. However, it also has notes of citrus and mild licorice and it can hold its own much better in spicy food, like those traditional to Mexico and Latin America. Ground oregano pairs well with chile peppers, cumin, and paprika. Add it to Tex-Mex chili, salsa and other Latin American dishes.
